Yosemite Sham

Oh yeah we love cars, motorbikes and such. But I think most folk are waking up to the fact that we need to look a little bit closer at the impact our usage has. Well most folk...

Dave Givens, an electrical engineer, from Mariposa California has won "America's Longest Commute" awarded by auto repair firm Midas. His daily trek to Cisco's San Jose headquarters is a 372 mile round trip.

Givens, however, has no plans to change his routine any time soon after running the same route since 1989.

Dave heads out the door at around 4:30 a.m. from a ranch at the edge of the Yosemite National Park. On a good day, he can make the 186-mile trip to Cisco's sprawling offices in less than three hours.

Givens usually arrives home at around 8 or 8:30 pm but the drive home through thicker traffic can take up to five hours some days.

"I could live a bit closer, but it would cost more and wouldn't be anywhere near as scenic," he said.

Yes quite. What is the point of living in a National Park if the only time you spend there it's pitch black?

Still it's nice to have all that fresh air...

Not too bad then.
Can I have £10,000 for being a work obsessed sad git?

$10,000 = £5,629 at current rates.

372 miles a day at a generous 30mpg (probably drives a Chevy Tahoe that can't scrape 20mpg) uses 56 litres of fuel a day.

at UK prices (£1 p/l) that works out to £280 per week (not counting wear & tear, oil, other consumables etc)

Just about manage 20 weeks.

Not very clever.

But at the Yank's current 44p/litre that's a far more reasonable £123 a week or 45 weeks of communting.

Any pictures of the saddo holding aloft some electroplated trophy celebrating his eco-crime?

Note: As a 500+ miles a week driver I am unable to fully exploit the sarcastic potential this news offers as I give Mother Earth a damn good kicking between the legs every time I turn the ignition.

I love his lifestyle, spending 30-45 hours a week drinking coffee and listening to Dee Jays, sat in a box churning out pollution.

His family wonder what the strange noises are when they're in bed. Perhaps something to do with the awful overweight man they see on weekend afternoons.

Cisco must doing something pretty bloody amazing to inspire such loyalty. Like curing cancer or working towards the extermination of Joss Stone.

*googles*

Hmmm, network solutions? Jeebus.
